Project facts
The Lixea-led L1X project aims to demonstrate a first-of-its-kind commercialisation of chemicals and building block materials from waste biomass instead of fossil feedstocks. In Central Slovakia, Lixea will construct a pioneering 25,000-tonne-per-annum sustainable biomass fractionation plant deploying its patented Dendronic® technology. It will drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 79% compared to the reference scenario.
Dendronic® offers high starting material flexibility and diverse biomass use, including mixed feedstocks. This versatility reduces reliance on monocultures and extensive transportation. The key to Lixea's innovative process is a unique clas of solvents known as ionic liquids, which convert 80% of the lignocellulosic biomass into sulfur-free, high-purity lignin and unique cellulose fibers. These new building blocks will replace established fossil-based materials and lead to the broader adoption of biobased products across various industries.
